Thanks Laura. I'm size 8-10 U.S. and looking to spend around $500 U.S. I know this is not a lot, but this is for a starter gown. Any suggestions are very much appreciated.

The prices are so high because of the immense amount of labor and expensive materials that go into them! Of course, some are even higher because of the name that's on them. I've found several decently priced used gowns, just keep combing the classified sites and ebay!

Have you tried eBay? Supposedly last week a couple of gowns by the American designer Randall were there, and were listed at some ridiculously low price. You might have to try there regularly, though.

The prices are very high, that's why I started making my own Do you sew? If so, I have some information about making your own at http://www.dancesportimage.com

If you don't mind me asking, what's your budget? It will help us to make more targetted recommendations if you tell us. Also, what size are you in regular street clothes? Someone reading this might have a dress or know a person near your size who is selling something.

Kez,

I agree with you. I tend to dislike the rhythm/latin outfits more than the smooth gowns at competitions. I think you can get away with a fairly plain dress in your favourite color and look stunning. An interesting comment made by a judge, "The dress should say something about your personality." There is a lot of pictures on the web where you can get ideas - then design your own dress by using a combination of pictures. If you have a ballroom shop in your area where you can actually try on some dresses, even better. This way you will get an idea as to what is flattering for your figure and get a feel for the material and more or less a size indication.

I've been looking around at some sites, including this one, for ideas but am fairly discouraged by the prices and selection. Without wanting to offend anyone, I find the prices outrageous and the many of the dresses depressingly garish. Can anyone share some suggestions on either a good site to check out, designer to contact or other good advice to get me started. Thanks very much!!

Hey, I think most of the people that make dresses here have already addressed the issue of cost. My girlfriend/partner exceeds the cost of many used ballgowns in cost of materials alone (rhinestones, fabric, feathers, etc.).

She does have a simple smooth gown for sale. If you're interested, send her an email:
