Cyd, Are you SURE you saw a Left Whisk (and not a Contra Check). In an earlier post you also mentioned that Mirko and Alessia did a Left Whisk in a Viennese Waltz(?). The Left Whisk is a figure in the Waltz, and it begins in PP, with the man's right foot crossing behind his left at the completion of the figure.

One may dance a Whisk from a closed position ( think Samba )...

that variation is used in the American styled samba ( among many other nice variations ) And.. I must assume the poster knows the difference between a Contra chaeck and a Whisk !

Terence. Straight from the horses mouth. In the International Style V. Waltz you will not get disqualified if you do a Contra Check or a Contra Check taking an extra beat. You will also not get D'd if you do Pivots or a Left Whisk.I should have it in writting on Wednesday. I would assume that the Left Whisk comes at the end of the Natural Fleckle simular to the Contra Check on the Reverse. I would imagine at this point that it would be permisable to hold that for two beats if it is needed to keep in Rhythm and Phrase. For those who don't know you will not have to do the V. Waltz if you intend to compete at the British in Blackpool. It is not on the program.

If one cares to check there are several sites which read. International Style Viennese Waltz.
Is danced in the closed position. The sylabus is limited and includes,
The Natural and Reverse Turns. Change Steps. Fleckerl's. Contra Check.
LEFT WHISK and canter time Pivots.
I would suggest googling Viennese Waltz Left Whisk. That will get you there

I dont know what sites you are reading , but the WDCs list does NOT include Whisk or Canter Pivots in Pro. Intern. style comp.

the " list " was discussed at a congress meeting ( last yr I believe ) and it was decided to adhere to the current variations ( 9 in all )I spoke with the Gen. Secty for about an hr on various topics, and this was one we discussed at length .

What you are probably refering to, is the American style V.W.,.. those that you mentioned ,have been included for many yrs ...

Terence. Not so. There are numerouse places under International Style Viennese Waltz where the Left Whisk is listed as being part of the sylabus. I'm not a lover of the V. Waltz. I also think the Fleckerl's are completely out of character with the rest of the dance. If it were left to me they could wrap it up and send it back to Vienna. What year was it when it apeared on the UK scene. It wasn't part of that first International at the Royal Albert Hall in 1956.

I would really appreciate it if anyone who spots a Left Whisk in an International Standard Viennese Waltz video provides a link to it (e.g., YouTube). Thanks!

One more time.. there ISNT one.. American style VW.. yes..

Theoretically, there are several variations that could be added, and there are those that were put forward to past committees.. ALL were rejected .
If you see it danced, it will not be in a WDC sanctioned comp.
