I have collected a number of single selections and downloaded from Rhapsody, and would be glad to try and list those for you. Most are at least within the past 40 years. If that would be helpful, it could give you a start.

I particularly like The Essential Waltz Collection and The Best of Slow Waltz. I enjoyed all the music on both these CD's.

Have fun collecting the old stuff.

In those old days music was written to dance to, mostly for Broadway shows.
Those old songs are still being recorded new today and will never leave us. A couple of days ago I danced to a Quickstep Swanee from a new recording. How old is that one. Terence wasn't even born then. 1919

Stuff like "Natural Woman" by Aretha Franklin or "Open Arms" by Journey? Could I Have This Dance by Anne Murray is pretty good, as well as some religious/holiday music like Silent Night. I have a pretty good list of music but most has vocals. I suppose if you want instrumental versions they are available. But you may have to burn your own CD's.

I never realized that Silent Night was a waltz!

I love religious music, especially Christmas music, so now I am wondering how much of it is waltz.

Dumb question: Does the music signature tell if the song can fit with a particular dance?

"Dumb question: Does the music signature tell if the song can fit with a particular dance?"

Sort of. The time signature alone does not, but the time signature plus all the supporting markings and tradition that a musician would use to understand what it practically means will get you close.

What remains is the interpretive sense of the difference between a combination of music & dance that is theoretically possible, as compared to one that is sensible. On a few occasions you will find a combination that is possible, but just doesn't make any sense. Also you will occasional encounter one that doesn't seem like it should be possible, but turns out to make wonderful sense as soon as you see someone dancing (a show for example) to it.
