I recommend you seek out ballrooms where they have a "no partner needed" policy. Many places have that policy and some even enforce changing partners strictly, so that everyone gets a chance to learn, not just couples. Some places allow couples to stay together, but if they do, they must dance outside of the circle (which is close to the instructors).

I'm amazed that some classes are still advertised with a "partner required" policy.

Often a dance lesson comes free along with a Friday or Saturday night dance. Some ballrooms have two lessons. One for beginners and one for intermediates levels. At one place, in Palo Alto, California, since they have 200 or 300 people coming, they offer three lessons simulatenously, one for beginners, one for intermediate, and one for the advanced level!

Private lessons are also a good way to start if you are too shy for a group class.

Bring your husband if possible, but if not, consider coming without him. It is the customer for many married ladies to come to a dance with or without their husbands.
