website concerns

I am trying to learn different types of ballroom dances, and am very upset that several of the dances that I am interested in does not have any information on basic steps--particularly the mambo and samba.
I have viewed the links to those websites and I keep getting a message saying that overview is coming soon! Why do you not have any information on those dances and when are you planning to get this problem PERMANENTLY fixed?

Actually, there is no need to PERMANENTLY fix it. As you may not realize, this is a website in the process of growing. The reason you don't see steps to all of the dances you want is because the people building the site haven't gotten to them yet. I'm sure Jonathan has a full-time job and probably wishes he could wave his magic wand and have the website magically finish itself. But, speaking as a webmaster myself, I can assure you that it never works that way.

If it upsets you this much, not to have access to the dances you want, how are you going to be when they start charging for the website when it does get finished?

Something to think about.

Dave,

Well said.

I think Jonathon is to blame!

He's done such a professional job building this site new visitors probably assume incorrectly that he's the Google of ballroom dancing.

I'm sure when VC realizes it's more a labour of love the comments will change.

OB (who can barely keep his wife's still incomplete simple website up to date)

BTW: Loved your website. Great niche. Seems like everyone is selling shoes now. We were lucky in our area being the first to go after the market and did very well. We've often gone to our Club Dance and put on a Sale and sell 20-25 pair. Last week a member's daughter tried the same thing and we've heard she sold 2 pair. We've already sated the market. For us it's now a dribs and drabs steady series of purchases from the new students. But we're happy with that.

There's nothing to "fix" because it's not broken. It's simply incomplete.

I realized a while ago that there's so much information to be written about, completing it on my own is literally impossible. I only have the rest of my life to do it, and that's just not enough time. So now I have a better idea.

Borrowing from the ingenuity of websites such as Wikipedia, I plan to let the world build my website for me. Users will post their own descriptions of dance steps, and rate those of others. The best and most popular will rise to the top, and with a little editing on my part, things will fall into place over time. And I'll fill in the blanks when nobody else steps up.

As far as the dance steps are concerned, my first and most important duty is producing the video clips. Those are the most important piece of information one can provide about a dance step, and they're the one thing I have to do myself. I have the entire bronze syllabus "in the can", so to speak, and the only reason it's not on the website now is because it takes so much time and work to produce each video clip. These clips alone will take me the better part of a year to finish processing, and then perhaps I can think about developing other areas of the website.

If you want to speed things along, be sure to buy things from our store, especially videos, and spread the word. And while you're at it, support us by advertising with a banner ad. The more money we make, the more I can afford to hire people to help me develop the website and finish it that much sooner.

In the meantime, enjoy what's here. It may be only 20% complete, but that's 20% more than you'll find anywhere else.

Regards,
Jonathan

Jonathon,

Well said.

Love the Wikipedia idea.

You do a terrific job.

The only people who complain are those that aren't aware of how much work is involved. It's amazing how demanding some people can be when it comes to free.

I'm sure VC will come through and post positively when the realization becomes evident.

Keep up the great work!

OB

hi jonathan,
i'm more than happy to chip in some of my time in building up this website.
I'm a huge fan of yours and this website and i would like to help in a way. It might sound crazy but in the internet age we live in, i reckon its possible even though i live on the opposite side of the globe to you
