What are the pros and cons of taking lessons at a franchise studio versus an individual studio?

Some of the pros are they have numerous teacher's and if your teacher can not make a lesson, they can have someone else fill in. It also is easier to switch teachers, if yours is not a good fit.

They have documented programs and evaluation processes.

They have special programs, shows and competitions.

Cons - They tend to be more costly.

The special programs and activities, they promote heavily are pretty expensive.

They tend to try to keep you in their competitions and shows. They also push pro/am competition, which tends to be more costly tham am/am competition.

Key point is there are good teachers out there, who will work with you to meet your objectives. If you start with a chain or an independent who is not doing that, go elsewhere.

Lot of people have strong feelings on this topic, based on personal experience. My key point is there are teachers out there who will meet YOUR needs, don't settle for less.

It really depends on the particular studio, rather than the overall system. The franchise studios are mostly independently owned, so a great deal depends on the owner of that studio, just like with the independents.

If you are trying to decide where to take lessons, I'd recommend visiting several studios and maybe taking their sample/new student lessons.

Tell them your goals and see what kind of dance program they would offer you. What's best for a student who mainly wants to social dance will not be the same as someone who wants to compete.

How do you feel about the teacher and the teaching methods?

How do they treat you about the financial aspects? That's how they will treat you in the future, so make sure you are comfortable.

Watch out for flattery, flirting, or a hard sell (like a one-day-only sale). You will be unhappy in the long run if you let these influence your decision.

When you find the right studio, you'll know. Enjoy!
