Phrasing

I am told that todays competion dancer dances every dance in eight bar choreographed phrasing. To understand this one has to realise that the music for dancing should be of an eight bar phrased. A simple test is to dance a Spin Turn in the Waltz. 4 5 6 of a Reverse . Reverse Turn Whisk and a Chasse. We are now out of phrase. If we repeat this we will be dancing the second half of the Spin Turn on the most accentuated beat.Try it. Once you are aware of this it doesn't feel right In other words that group will only fit seven bars of music. So starting on the first of an eight bar phrased piece of music we will not be able to do the above unless we put steps taking one bar of music in. This is easily done by putting in a Corte and holding it for one bar before going into the Back Whisk and Chasse. Social Dancers it doesn't matter so much. But in a competition a judge will pick it in a flash. It doesn't stop with the Waltz. Foxtrot Jive Samba Quickstep Tango all are the same for those who wish to dance in time and at the same time in phrase. If you are a competition dancer and you start putting stuff together yourself be aware of this.
