I guess only the older posters will remember, when vocals were almost not exsistant in slow trot. You have to look at musical composition. Many changes have taken place since the forties/ fifties .

As far as Amer.style is concerned-- it greatly depends on the level.

Bronze is more up tempo, designed more as a strong rhythmical dance, Silver and upwards , falls into line with the Intern. style tempi .
Bottom line-- music is very subjective , and the likes and dislikes are always personal choices .
