BRAD,

I would suggest to you to go to a ballroom studio in your area and attend some group classes. The average price that i pay is $10 - $12 per 50 min class. It is fairly cheap (private lessons can be expensive) and you can learn the basics and see in 6 months if you still like it. Also ask about friday or saturday evening practice parties.
