Spin Turn, Rise and Fall

When am i going to see the rise and fall on the second half of a Spin Turn. Waltz International style done correctly. Excluding the top dancers of course. I think we all know that the first half has rise and fall. Then a Pivot, followed by rise at the end of on five up on six. Lower at the end of six. Which to me is a Hover. What do we see but flat flat.

Hi onlooker
i'm surprised you're not seeing better spin turns. Even at my level (intermediate)i would automatically go onto a heel after the pivot you mention, rising on to a toe. And as you say, it is a hover,- the lady has to do a brush step, so she needs time to do it.

Hi All,
I can't agree that steps 5 and 6 of the Natural Spin Turn are danced as an Hover, or even be called a Hover. Various amounts of turn can be danced over steps 5 to 6, but it is standardised as 3/8 to the right. A definition of an Hover could be: ‘Part of a figure in which the movement of the body is restricted while the feet remain almost stationary, well up in a rise position'. If an 1/8 to the right is danced between steps 5 and 6 an Hover effect could be used.

Try dancing a hover telemark with the body motion restricted and the feet almost stationary, and see what kind of criticism you get.

Hi Anon,
The Hover only occurs when the movement of the body is checked!

Have you ever done in Waltz an Overturned Spin Turn into a Twist Turn, which was very popular in the 50's. Now that finishes with a type of Hover, and has plenty of rise and fall. It seems to me there is a lack of understanding of the technique of how to move out of your partners way. For instance step four of the Spin Turn. If the ladies step is straight ahead than the man's step is diag to wall. Any other way will have the lady stepping around the man and trying to occupy the same space.

You don't have to place your foot out to the side to move your body out of the way.

I have a few tapes by Hilton. Woods Gleaves. I look at their position in relation to the floor boards, and then in slow motion see where step four on an Open Impetus Turn Waltz time goes. Also have a look at the shaping of the foot on that step. The one i was just looking at, the step was surprisingly wide. It was an action step and might have been neccessary at that point in time. But wide of the body it was and there was a toe turned inwards there also.
