Hey all, I'm new, and I just wanted to comment on this awesome website! I'm from MN, and I don't know how to dance, but want to take ballroom dancing lessons, because I have a HUGE desire to learn how to dance, and I can't wait to get started!

Graceful: Your enthusiasm is refreshing and I suggest you chase your dream to learn how to dance. Seek out an experienced and active pro to work with you on the basics of several of the ballroom dances. Make the decision to leave your "Ego" at the door to the studio and have an open mind. Try too to learn other than "Studio" dances so you can go to some of the dance venues to experience different dancers and styles. I think you will find yourself easily hooked on the rush of energy you gain from learning to dance, getting the exercize and experiencing people and styles. Finally, put your skills to the test of competition. Not for the trophy but for the thrill of the ride.

I know the feeling. The ballroom bug bit me so badly last semester in my university's ballroom dance class that I now attend it with the beginners, just to dance.

don't take lessons yet until u understand basic in from ballroomdancers, like foot position, foot work, posture, line of dancing and practice by yourself 1st and then with partner, timing, syllabus and buy proprofessional instructional videos most of basic like here, dancevision etc.
good luck

In person lessons from a good teacher are probably more value for the money than videos

It is most important to Find a good teacher that you click with and will take you through the layers or techniques of dance that you need to learn. The problem is for a beginner to recognize a good teacher--most waste lots of money on social teachers. After you improve you may want to have one good base teacher and bring in more specialized teachers to help in various dances.

Dance is like some type of revolving plan. You have to keep it up when you start or you will loose it. One private lesson per week over years will work. Good classes help. Choose dvd's that do the syllabus work that you are learning in each dance. International Latin and Standard syllabus has not changed much for 30 years. American Style Syllabus is another story.

Personally I like to have a manual and a dvd of the dance movements that I am learning with my teacher for future competition. This way I have a reference to look back to if I forget parts of the figure.

Amateur USABA competitions are economical and a way to improve your dancing and give you goals. Showcase to help improve or work on new technique.

Brigham Young or Dance Vision dance camps are great if you can afford it.
