Yes, some brands of dance shoes do come in wide. I've never had to pay extra for them, but they often are special orders which means I have to wait for them to come in so that I can try them on.

I am paying 35$ extra for wide shoes, because they are special orders. I have to wait for them and when they come so that I can try them on, if they don't fit, my 35$ is non-refundable. If the store has that type of fee, make sure to try a pair of a similar model the store has in stock. Usually, only specific models can be order in wide. Most of the stores have some wide models available.

I have a difficult time with dance shoes, but am very happy with a pair from TOE TO TOE DANCE SHOES. They offer a nice selection of wide shoes and can be ordered on-line. The worst scenerio is paying postage if you need to return them.

Do you really need wide shoes, or do you simply want shoes that aren't so outrageously pointed in the toe?

Normally, I wear a wide shoe. However for ballroom dancing I do not. The shoes are a bit tight at first. However if I buy wide, after just a short period of time the shoe does stretch, and now wide is to wide.

Can you get along at first without a wide shoe?

Yes, just ask for them. As in street shoes, some styles might not be available. Wide is wide, not medium sometimes. I order both in the US and UK via web.
Vendors often visit studios with shoes to try on and buy. Some dance studios sell shoes in their lobbies. Ask studios and clubs for dates and catalogues if you don't wish to search the web. Dance shoes that no longer fit tightly can be worn as street shoes later.

I also wear a wide shoe. I generally ASK for shoes that run wide. A knowledgeable vendor will know which shoes run wide, which run narrow, and the like.

I've found a few styles that work well for me; I have my favorites in both smooth and rhythm/latin shoes. Some styles have straps and the like so they're very adjustable.

The other thing I find is that if I buy shoes with leather uppers/straps, those tend to stretch a bit as they break in. I tend to buy those a bit snug.

Elegance Dance Shoes will make any of their shoes in a wide width. The down side is that it's a special order, and generally not returnable.

Hope this helps! I'm a hard-to-fit wide foot with a relatively narrow heel! I tend to shop for dance shoes whenever I see a vendor set up somewhere. I'm always in search for my next "back-up" pair of shoes.
