tanning for a competition

Can anyone give advice on fake tanning? Up till now, I've been using Neutrogena (or similar drugsore brand) foam. It takes about 5-8 layers to acheive any visible results (not a problem), and it comes out rather yellow (problem). Drugstore bronsers get washed away by sweat. I'm kind of afraid to buy "pro" tan from dancesport.uk and I don't know how to use anyway. Is there any way to avoid a tanning bed (it involves actual tanning, which I'd rather avoid)? What products are good, relatively inexpensive and don't require a tanning professional?

Thanks!

If you want to step from the drug store brands, you could try Estee' Lauder Sun. My teacher's pro partner recommeded it, and I've been using it with good success -- every time I tan up for a competition people say "wow, you got some sun, where did you go last weekend?" I tell them it's fake, and the response usually is something like "You did a really good job on your fake tanning, you had me fooled."

If you are super pale and are just trying to add some reasonable color for Standard and Smooth, get "medium." If that doesn't get you dark enough, go for "dark." I have fair skin, blonde hair, and blue eyes. "Medium" comes out nicely brown and natural looking on me -- not yellow and not orange. I only have to do three coats to get the color I want.

Of course...everyone's skin is different, so you might not end up being as happy with it as I have been. But if you want to avoid Pro Tan, Super Braun, and professionally applied spray-on tans like Magic Tan and Fantasy Tan, then it's worth a try.

Thanks, Laura, for your advice. I'll try the dark Estee Lauder Sun first, and if that's not enough, I'll go with spray-on next time. It's just when I read instructions for Pro tan it's kind of scary. I guess if I take it literally what the Neutrogena bottle says it may be scary too. I have grey eyes, brown hair (colored to brunette) and I dance Latin, so I want to be pretty dark. My natural skin color is not that pale, but still way too pale for any ballroom comp. Yes, everybody's skin is different and I'll keep that in mind. Thanks for your advice. I'll try what you suggested.
