Int. Samba: which step to do contraction?

Which steps in samba requires abdominal contraction and which steps do not?

I think this is required on all steps with a forward component (e.g. basic forward step, samba walk, shadow bota fogo).

What about steps with no forward components like the back step of the basic step, the whisk, volta, etc?
