dance floor treatment?

We use a local community centre hall as our main practice venue. The floor is bare wood block, but in excellent shape and perfect for dancing.
The hall committee want to treat the floor (with a varnish or something) to make it more 'durable'. My experience of varnished floors is bad - they're usually 'clingy' and heavy to dance on.
Does anyone know of a good varnish-type treatment (polyurethane and the like, maybe)which can be used without destroying the dancing-friendly characteristics?
