I'm interested how do players move their hips when they dance the basic step of Brasilian samba.
Thanks a lot,
Ana

Have a look at the video clips on this site in the learning center. That might give you an idea of what is done. The best advce i can give you, and you don't want to hear this, is to go for a private lesson with an instructor to help you with the hip motion. Samba is known to be a harder dance to learn and we won't be able to describe it in words to you.

good luck

Ana. The hip movement in Samba is a body tick which goes front to back and not side to side.

### How do players move their hips when they dance the basic step of Brasilian samba. ###

When dancing the Natural Basic Movement there is a hip movement to the side when the body weight is received on the first step which is a 3/4 beat. The hips are recovered on the 1/4 beat and then displaced again on the 2nd beat.

luv2dance. If you go to Dance Max and scroll down you will find the changes to the basic Samba which came under the microscope. Putting the weight first on the left foot then on the right foot and then back again to the left created a hip movement sideways. And sideways it is not. The body tick is front to back. Volta's also.

Hi Don,
I believe your explanation of movement refers to the action of the Samba Walks and Voltas - to name just two -which is a pelvic action and not a hip action. The post asked about the Basic Step of the Brazilian Samba which can be assumed it is either the natural or reverse basic. These two figures came from the Slow Samba or the 'Baion' and a hip action occurs just as I stated.

lluv2dance. I am quoting. The latest technique book has been changed from, on the second step in a Reverse or Natural Basic, with part weight to no weight. Now that alters everything we had learnt for years. The question is why was it changed?? Does it give a better description of how the step was intended to be done in the first place.

Ana. We were on many occasions in a Latin Samba technique class, made to fold our arms across our chest and do Crusados Walks and Locks keeping our arms to the front. The idea was to get us used to isolating the upper body from the hips. Rumba Walks was the same. Keep the top still and move the hips. Its called Hip Isolation.

I was told to crunch my lower ab when both of my knees are bent and that will give the pelvis a forward tilt. I like to hear from anybody who has any advice or opinion on this subject.
