Hi!

I'm a 15 year old who had a crash course ballroom dancing lesson at camp for a week this summer. I loved it! My camp counselor was from the Ukraine and danced professionally there, and she taught me the basics of the slow waltz and the rhumba. We practiced every night-sometimes dancing to Bob Marley playing on the camp speakers-and the more I danced, the more I was hooked.
It was especially nice for me because I have a disability which makes it hard for me to walk. The rhumba, specifically, was difficult for my balance, but both the dance steps and my walking and posture improved over the week.

I guess what I'm asking--in a really long and drawn out story--is if anybody knows a dance teacher or studio in Northern Virginia who would be willing to teach a disabled person to ballroom dance?? It's kind of far-fetched, I know, but I know that as I practice I will get stronger.

Thanks for your help or advice in advance. Any advice you may have would be helpful!

Sincerely,
Interested in VA

Interested in VA,

I have been to quite a few studios in the north VA / DC area and might be able to help out if you give me more details about what your goals with dancing are.
Do you want to do american (social) dancing ? Would you rather learn international dancing ?
Are you interested in group lessons or private lessons ?
Salsa lessons are very popular with the younger crowd. You might only find much older people in the other dance classes. Would that bother you ?

I don't think you disability will prevent you from dancing. You danced already...

hi dancer,

Thanks for replying! I am mostly interested in private lessons. As for style, I'd like to learn the more traditional dances-the waltz, the foxtrot, that sort of thing. I'm open to learning whatever the teacher thinks I could do, though! I wouldn't be bothered by older people being in the dance class at all, if I take group lessons. Do you have any reccommendations?

Thanks again!

Send me an e-mail to comp-user@usa.net.
I'll give you more details when i receive your e-mail. Just put "dancer" in the subject line of your e-mail.

That way we can exchange personal information without broadcasting it over the internet.
