Hi, I posted a message a couple weeks ago that didn't bring a response, so I am thinking I was maybe unlcear as to what I was asking.. what i really wanted to know is, is there a ballroom/ latin dancing "capital" of the U.S? I am just curious as to where the "hub" of the ballroom dance world is considered. From my experience in ballet, I know that it is New York City, is the same true for ballroom? ANY oppinions would be amazing.. thanks

New York is the major place. Boston, Washington DC, Los Angeles and San Francisco are also interesting. And then there are a zillion dancers in Provo, Utah, related to the Brigham Young University program.

The best coaches go all around the country all the time anyway, so unless you are super top elite (like US semi-finalist), it really doesn't matter where you live. There are good teachers in Seattle, Portland, and Atlanta too.

Hi,

I'm going to be in New York for 7 weeks (coming from England) and I was hoping firstly to get to do some dancing with my boyfriend over there, can anyone recommend a good social dance club?
Secondly I often make my own dresses, does anyone know of any good fabric shops in Manhattan that sell stretch fabrics and other dance materials?

Thanks

Liz

A friend of mine just went to New York and she recommends Spandex House. I don't know exactly where it is located, but it is somewhere in Manhatten, you can probably Google for it.

Thanks Laura and Ron, I did Google them and had a look at the website, I'll definitely be heading there when I'm over. They're in Manhattan and easily accessible. Some very good deals on fabric as well from the website info so much appreciated!

I noticed the bigger cities, it is more popular than smaller cities. I live in Austin, Tx. and its not that popular. If anybody could help me, im getting ready to move to Wyoming, my fiance is going to grad school there. I have not found any studios over the internet yet but i would like to find a studio and a proffesional partner while im there.Does anyone know of any studios close

Austin's Ballroom popularity waxes and wanes. For our size of town, I think it's pretty okay.

We have four independant studios with good teachers and weekly ballroom dances held by one organization, weekly swing dances held by another, sizzling latin clubs whose dance floors are always packed with salsa and merengue, many nights a week.

Plus we are a short drive from San Antonio, and a slightly longer drive from Dallas and Houston, which all have good ballroom communties.

The top professional latin couples in the US live and train in New Jersey along with the 2nd amateur couple and top youth latin couple. The top standard couples live and train in New York as well as the top amateur latin couple. Boston, Washington D.C., the Bay area in California, and Utah also have large dance communities all with top coaches and competitions.
