First Audition

Hi,
I've been dancing salsa for about 4 months now, and I just love it! I haven't been able to get private lessons so I dance at every opportunity I get, which is about 2 to 3 times a week. I know I have improved quite a bit since the beginning, because people who danced with me then and now tell me that I've improved. The local salsa club is offering auditions for people to join their salsa company, and this is the chance I've been waiting for! However, I know some of the people trying out and they've been dancing for years... So even though I have some very tough competition and my changes of getting in are slim, I was wondering if anyone has any advice for me, either in terms of a first audition or salsa dancing in general... Something that could wow the judges perhaps?
Thanks!
DQ

Sorry to say it, but I'd guess that your chances of getting in are less than slim. If you want to audition for the experience, there's probably no harm. But I'd talk to the organizers about it first. Dance communities in any given area tend to be small and I would have some concern about how auditioning so early would affect my reputation. If you look bad compared to the more experienced dancers (almost a certainty) or it's regarded as arrogant, clueless, or "not paying your dues" to audition at this stage, you might end up hurting your chances of being included down the line when you are a better dancer. Tell the organizers that joining such a company is your dream and ask them what you need to do to prepare for it. If they think you should audition now, they'll almost certainly suggest it.

Oh dear! I didn't mean to make you discouraged. I would definitely talk to the organizers now about your interest in joining at some point. I'm sure they will love your enthusiasm and will give you good advice. In the meantime, keep dancing!
