A jack-and-jill is a dance contest. People sign up for it individually and partners are assigned by some random process (names out of a hat, etc.). You dance with whoever you get, so it's a contest that rewards good lead and follow skills.

the only jack and jill i ever participated in, (it was the only time one came up) they lined everybody up on either sides of the floor (big lines so its hard to get yourself paired with a specific person,) then one by one the counted off from the begining of the line and that was your partner. my partner was at my level or slightly above, but he didnt lead very well, and im told often that im a very good follower, but we had fun and thats the point.
