Hello All!

I have not been on here before. Girlfriend and I love ballroom dancing (as seen on TV and Movies). She is hearing impaired and I am not. Is there any recommended place to contact for possible lessons that would include the hearing impaired? She can hear/feel the beat (bass). I would love to surprise her with a get away to somewhere that we could try to learn. Thanks to any and all of you that reply!

You never said where you were located, but I hope that you can fins someone who can work with you and your girlfriend.
I am a retired dance teacher but I also have an background in working with the deaf and hearing impaired, since my parents are deaf. On many occasions I have danced with my mother and she has never had a dance lesson but she sure enjoyed it. Needless to say by dancing with her sure called a lot of attention her way.
As a dance teacher I have taught groups of deaf people to do the HUSTLE. YES, that was years ago but they enjoyed it as well.
As a teacher, I had once couple where the man was deaf and his wife could hear and I had a great time teaching them, and they did a good job. I also found that it was not as difficult to do as one might think. It might have helpped that I could do ASL and did not need his wife to translate for me.
I hope you find someone to work with you I am sure you will both enjoy it.

My wife is hearing impared - and is a far better ballroom dancer than I will ever be. Maybe it has something to do with focusing on the rhythym of the music and nothing else. If a dance instructor speaks to your friend so she can read their lips, and turn up the music volume a little so the percussion can be felt, I am sure your friend will do just fine

Why doesn't someone invent a light that would flash to the beats of the music?

A great idea, Luv2. Maybe something on the lines of a metronome using light and not sound?

Sounds like a good idea, except

- it would be difficult to synchronize a light with the music rhythym precisely unless it was programmed into the music (most recorded music varies slightly in the tempo throughout a song)

- For dances such as the Mambo there are a number of sub rhythms in the music that can be expressed in the dancing and difficult to express with lights

- It might be a useful teaching tool, in a social setting the light might be a nuisance to everyone else

OK. What about an instroment in the shape of a wrist watch which can receive a signal of the beats and could give a pulse throb?
