Cabaret dancing

Can someone explain the difference with cabaret dancing and the other dances? What I mean is, are there certain steps or requirements you need to do in the cabaret dance (as in the the cha cha or waltz) and if so what are they or is just a complete freestyle? Also, I think lifts are allowed in cabaret- are they ever present in competition ballroom?

Caberet dancing is also called Theater Arts. In a caberet competition there is no specific amount of "dance steps" required. Of course since it is encompassed under the ballroom umbrella it is customary to do a few recognizeable ballroom steps. But I think of it closer to interpretive dance more than ballroom.
I have noticed that the judging isn't always uniform. That is, some judges will judge higher for a couple's dance (and musicality) ability, while others will judge higher for the amount and difficulty of lifts.
Cabaret competitors at competitions are usually pretty sparse. And at some competitions (big ones, like Blackpool) you have to be invited to compete.
And another thing about cabaret competitions. They can either be outstanding, or they can be painfully bad. Be sure to choose wisely your music and costumes (not to mention your partner and coach!).

Dancer. I think you will find that the name is Exhibition Dancing. Or at least it was last time I was there.
