I'm new to ballroom dancing, but I've already decided to do some competing. Right now I'm in for my first real competition this summer--can someone experienced give me makeup advice (for a young woman), particularly about eyes? No matter what I do they come out looking terrible.

~Thanks

It's hard to give advice when we can't see what you are doing. But I'll say this: just keep practicing and experimenting at home, you will get better at your makeup as you learn more and and practice more, just like with everything else.

Don't forget the false eyelashes--they are a necessity. The bigger the better... Even the longest, most obnoxious looking eyelashes look downplayed when viewed in an audience or in pictures.
Black liquid eyeliner works better than pencil. Apply to both upper and lower lids.
Really take time to examine your face. Add highlight where you wish, to emphasize your features (i.e., if you have a wide nose, apply highlighter down the center to "raise" it)
Apply foundation to the neck as well as the face. You may get the mask effect from the lights and in pictures, particularly if you're pale and you apply a bronzer shade.
Apply lipliner to the whole lip so if your lipstick rubs off between heats you still have color on them. Apply one coat of lipstick over the liner, put face powder over it, and apply another coat of lipstick. This will help it last longer.
Also, don't forget the effect of a good powder glitter... apply it to the brow bones under the brow, blending down and out, and also to the cheekbones, under the eyes, above the blush.
Another thing about blush, do not mindlessly apply it to the apples of your cheeks. That is not the objective. Use some common sense here, where your cheek bones naturally create a shadow is where the blush should be applied, in the hollow created in between your jaw and cheekbones.

I always make sure I have white or glittery translucent eyeshadow that I apply at the very top of the eyelid, right underneath the eyebrow, and also in the very corner of my eye and then a tiny bit underneath my bottom eyelashes. This will open up the eye. But don't put so much on that you appear a clown, it should barely be visible. Also I was always told to stay away from blue eyeshadow as it closes the eye.
In my opinion the best thing you can do for your "competition face" is have white teeth. If your teeth have a natural yellow tint, next to a red based lipstick they will look really yellow. I would start whitening your teeth now with those strips. You know what they say, "you're never fully dressed without a smile" and I'm sure they would have said a white smile had they thought about it :)

I always help the ladies in the studio with their makeup. Maybe the ladies that teach will help if you ask?? At my studio I always have everyone who is competing come in and we work on things like makeup, costums, and hair. (even for the men) Talk to your teacher in this bussnes he should also be able help. Good Luck!

Thank you for your advice!! The more I look at pro competition pictures, the more diversity I see in the ladies' eye makeup. I'll keep your comments in mind for my next competition!
