The pattern is different in Waltz and Foxtrot.

For Waltz, man's part is as follows:

1. RF back (check)
2. LF forward
3. RF side

4. LF back in CBMP (partner outside)
5. RF back
6. LF side & slightly forward

Step 1 of the following pattern is taken with RF forward outside partner. Typically followed by 1-3 Natural Turn (into Spin Turn, Impetus, etc).

This figure typically begins after 1-3 Reverse Turn to back diagonal wall, turns 1/8 to L. over 1-3 to back LOD, 1/8 to L. between 3-4 to back diagonal center, then another 1/4 to L. over 4-6 (body slightly less) to point to diagonal wall.

CBM is on 1, 2, and 5. "Officially" (according to the tech book) there isn't any sway. But many advanced dancers do stretch metronomically, especially when the lady opens her head over 5-6.

The Foxtrot has two closed position Weaves in the bronze syllabus -- The Natural Weave, and the Basic (ie Reverse) Weave. Not only are they different than the Waltz Weave, they're also quite a bit different than each other. I'll let someone else describe these Weaves.

By the way, all of this information can be found in the ISTD Ballroom Technique book, available in the BallroomDancers Mall at https://www.ballroomdancers.com/Shopping/Books/.

Jonathan

Just fyi you all are talking about two different types of weave. The first described the weave from promenade, which is at least a similar idea between waltz and foxtrot, though waltz rises and falls per measure while foxtrot has one rise cycle for the whole two measure figure. Then Jonathan posted the basic weave, which is quite different in its entry.
