| Someone gave a concept of static part and dynamic part composed in major phase, depending on pitch interval and firm ending . such as "Do". Unfortunately, I missed this website now. Have you any idea about it ? The mini phrase has 2 bars. Major phrase consists of several mini phrase to express more full emotion. In my mind, I accept phrase is short sequence rather than sentence. My coach said phrase is music sentence. He said he had ability to handle the music. But I still persist music related to dance performance is what I should learn. Music is sole of dance. The "connection" between steps even figures without " dead point "should flow with the music emotion. ( Sorry, I am not good in English, maybe next time I will find out a better way to figure what I do want to express here .) ylchen |
| Yichen. It sounds very complicated to me. Why don't you count, in the Waltz, a simple routine. Which will start with a Natural Spin Turn on the first beat of the eight bar phrasing. It will consist of Spin Turn .456 of a Reverse Turn. Reverse Turn and Whisk followed by a Progresive Chasse to start again. You will find that on the Chasse you are on the Seventh Bar, leaving the eighth bar to start again. You might say an easy remedy is to start with a Change Step. Now you are doing your major power step on the second bar. To overcome part of the problem we might start a with a preperation step on bar four of a four bar introduction. Most of the above is why a top competition dancer does n't do the same steps in the order we are used to doing them. Sometimes you might have wondered why a Oversway Line is held for what seems an incredibly long time. They most likely arrived on bar five and held it for all told three bars, Chasse out ready to pick up bar one on their next movement. By the same token it might be held even longer. or shorter if they arrived on bar six. Is this all necessary. For a social dancer or low grade medalist probably no. But a top competitor or demonstrator will never dance out of phrase with the music, and this is only the Waltz. Quickstep. Try Basics. Lock. into a Spin Turn with the first step of the Spin Turn on the count of 12. Now we have the problem, which also includes the Foxtrot of not only dancing in phrase but also in rhythm . Even if we find this difficult to do at least we should know that what the music is saying. Lastly , never in the Foxtrot do the preperation step on beats 1.2.  |
| How to identify what is powerful figure ? My coach emphasized that I shoul project myself as far as possible by my left foot on step 5, ( natural spin turn , waltz ) ,turn and first half , turn and rise and expell out on late half with his body, not reject the arriving body weight on 5, the flying feeling is beauiful . A lot of routin have natural pivot , natural spin from 1 -3 bars. Graceful natural turn 1-3 in strong first bar. I have no idea which figure is soft or strong , except double lock step , it seems easily present soft and light feeling . Please try Fabio 's waltz routine : natural turn, running spin turn action ( lady left foot without weight on 4, and move forwad continuously on 1 of next figure ), 123, 1&23/ reverse pivots and side cross 123&, reverse pivots to CPP, into contra fallaway reverse turn slip pivot , 123,1&23, wisk 123, lady quik turn on man left side into oversway 1&23, hover to high pivot turn 1231( lady ). I found the young coach easily dance the above -mentioned routine ( they never practiced it )with normal music tempo , but I have difficult at that moment between bar 2 and 3.( right turn enter left turn in speed . Fabio had trnasient still after running spin turn , then entered 2 reverse pivots 123. they even had bump in contrafallaway. I love the 7th,8th bar of figurs , they created unusual beuatiful line figure on 7th,8 th bar.) and need to decelerate before 3rd bar. or slow down the tempo for practice. | In my mind, figure itself seldom has its " emotion ". but dancer can put some factors into it to express herself, such as speed, power, stride and body language with the melody. In such moment , my coach said: you are listening the music.  ( I forgot I was dancing with him .  , I thought he might be focus on that the strong or weak of the bar should be .But if I am the musician, I will flow with the melody as my priority.not the dancing people. >  ) Musical phrasing is a sequence of bars having meaning .It contains of a short of passage or segment , or larger unit ( 4bars, 8bars, or 16 bars or more.) with logical ending , such as its rood chord . The first bar may be stronger ,or manifested as a repeat, changed chord, changed instrument , or another style of segment .phrasing has more full meaning than sentance .
