The newly formed TLU Ballroom Dance Society at Texas Lutheran University in Seguin is looking for instructors in either the San Antonio or Austin areas. The instructors must specialize in both International Style and American Style ballroom dancing. The group will also start a competition team.

Sammie,

Great to hear about your society.

Have you checked out ours? We've been running for 11 years now after spinning off from the local university ballroom dance club after people graduated.

We did a cruise out of Galvestan in February/March. We had all sorts of people coming up to us asking if we could teach in San Antonio.

Unfortunately no but great people none the less.

So you are Canadian? you are really interested in teaching here?
Thanks for responding.

If I cannot find any instructor in the Austin/San Antonio corridor region, I will move to Seguin, and simply teach the classes with the club, and eventually attend instructor training classes in Austin or San Antonio. I do not have a car yet, but I may drive in the summer of 2007. I have been dancing for almost two years in many partner dance styles.

San Antonio historically does not have a large dance community, since the area is dominated by families. The adults have to spend time raising children, and not doing any recreational activities like dancing.

Austin, with high real estate values (to keep families away), University of Texas at Austin (with its major ballroom dance program), and the "Live Music Captal of the World," has a strong dance scene. San Antonio suffers from the stigma as "one big suburb" and a "singles wasteland." To take care of the disadvantage, I viewed the two cities as one big metropolitan area - the "corridor region." Many Austin dance instructors today also teach in San Antonio.

Stephen Cullip, NDCA's former US National professional Standard Champion is moving to Austin from San Leandro, Calif., within a few months, so he could teach the classes.
