too short, too tall

I was just wondering if anyone had any advice for me in my situation. My husband and I have been talking and we would like to start taking ballroom classes but I am concerned with pur height differences. He is 6'2" and I am 4'11" will this cause a problem with our dancing or will we be able to work it out?

That is a big difference, but if you want to, you can work it out. One thing I would recommend is focusing on American (rather than International) style dancing, at least for the smooth dances (waltz, foxtrot, tango). You'll have the biggest problems in closed dance position (where you are touching at the torso), but American style smooth dances have a lot of open patterns, where you are holding hands.

For the same reasond, you might enjoy latin dances (cha cha, rumba, salsa) and swing.

And you have one advantage. When you get a bit more advanced, it will be easy for you to do lifts and tricks!

We have a 9 inch difference and it has not been a problem. In some latin dances and swing, a height differences is an advantage in some ways. Our last male teacher was 2 or 3 inches taller than me. He had no problem dancing smooth with my wife during our lessons.

There are some moves were it is a problem for us in smooth dances and we just don't do them. Two teachers at our studio, with a foot difference, have competed together in smooth. Our first lady teacher was almost a foot shorter than me and had no problem do smooth dances with me. Actually I had trouble matching the length of her steps.

One of the places we dance, there is a tiny girl who loves dancing, she is at most 4 foot 9 inches. I have seen her dance smooth dances well with young guys well over 6 foot.

Justabeginner. I take it that you are 4.11 in your bare feet. With a 3" heel you are 5'2. With about an inch your husband is 6.3. You should be able to manage Latin. In Modern there is nothing to stop your partner from bending his knees. There have been some very tall guys with a shortish lady who have made it right to the very top. They have split now that is the Cutlers. You mighty have seen them in the first Burn the Floor show.
