New Dancer

Hello to all of experience. I have been dancing everyday for the last year and half. Mostly latin, some smooth. Main focus has been of mambo, cha cha and rumba (international style). I feel that I am hitting a point that is frustrating, the point where the hard work isn't fun anymore and you don't feel good enough. I dont compete but would one day love to see myself sparkling along with the rest. I am 24 years old and have a dance background before this. Am I too old to one day be a successful dancer? I know I have a long way to go because I have been only in this for a year and a half. But curious what the opinions and advice would be.

To add to my remark...does height matter? In partnership?

It all depends on what you mean by "successful." So, what is your goal right now?

Gosh a goal...I want to be a great dancer. I want to feel like a great dancer. When we watch great movies, we get drawn into the story, the what happens next, the passion, the action, we almost become apart of it. When I have watched some of the top dancers, it feels the same way. I want to make people feel like that too. I guess that's my goal...is that silly?

No, it's not silly. It's great to be able to give other people that gift.

But as a goal for yourself, it does run a risk of putting too much power over your dancing in the hands of other people. Different people respond differently to the same performance, even to the top dancers. For every performance you've seen that you thought was great, there will be some people who see it and don't like it.

IMO, a better goal is to dance the very best you can and in a way that makes you feel happy and satisfied with yourself and your dancing. That has the advantage of being a goal that you can meet every day and reset for the next day. It takes a very long time to become a great dancer, and if that's the only thing that will make you happy, you'll have to wait a long time to be happy! But any day you know you did your best and that was better than your best last month can be a great day!

Good luck!

I guess hight does matter a little (sometimes) and usually it is useful to be around the same hight.

When your dancing and you don't feel like the best dancer it is often because someone is pushing you for everything to be better, and that is good because when you get out there and dance your routine in front of the crowd you know you've done everything you can to make your routine the best and you DO feel like a great dancer! Just wait and see.
