Can someone give me some good instructions on doing a good rumba walk. I have been taking lessons since March 05 and find that this is the hardest to master for me. I am female. Seems the male instructors just can't explain it well enough or it is just me. I have a wonderful instructor from Turkey and he is a talented dancer in every way and very good in the Latin dances, which I prefer, any pointers would be greatly accepted. Most of the problem I feel is myself.

Hi. Gloria. There is an excellent DVD with Slavic and Katrina on the Rumba. They do go into every detail. Nobody can learn this on there own and even after dancing and competing any Professional or Amatuer will tell you that they never stop practising the Rumba Walks Usually solo up and down or around the floor to music.
This might help.Straight knees locked on a Forward or Backwood Basic
The feet are turned out to 5 to 1 on a clock face. There must be no gap between the thighs. On a Walk Forward from the front the rear leg is hidden by the front leg. After one step foward the weight moving forward over a still front foot. This brings the rear foot to the toe. Which in turn will raise the hip. On an and count the raised hip will come down into a nuetral position. This is using the hips . Remember a step is just a step on the solid beat. It is on the inbetween where we actually dance. As your feet come side by side still moving keep the heel off the floor as high as you can on that moving foot. Katarina on the disk shows how for practise we can have two pieces of paper one under each toe or ball. The idea is to Rumba Walk and keep the paper under the foot. Its not easy. Only last year when Former World Champion Karen Hardy was asked how long do we practise Rumba Walks. Her answer. Forever. I hope this might help. I would hope that your teacher would be saying something simular to the above. Best of luck

My thanks for your reply, we practice and I practice at home but it is so hard to get enough time in on just twice a week. Lessons are so expensive and I have yet to find a dance partner. That is one of my goals so that I can pratice what I have learned and also learn along with someone also.
Thanks again, I will invest in some of the DVD's, I have seen her dance and she dances beautifully, again thanks.

Gloria. There is a bit more to add to a Rumba Walk. This is what we are often told. Once the front foot is in place. Both feet turned out to 5 to 1 on a clock face. If you stopped right there and brought your feet together they should still be at 5 to 1. With your front foot in place. Think only of your back foot Which will be right to the very edge of the inside edge of your big toe. Continue to use that foot to send your weight to a position of imbalance where you will have to catch your weight. The heel high off the floor on your back foot will give you a high hip on that foot. Use it. I write this not as an instruction , though it might help. I do write this so you will know what to look for, for yourself on an instruction DVD. Keep Walking. If you can practise your Rumba Walks as much as possible you will finish up better than most of your friends.Good Luck . Don

Gloria. If you are still watching ,here is a tip from Katarina.Ladies as a practise pull your skirt up between the thighs and keep it there. Have the feeling that you are wearing a very tight mini skirt. Men put a post card between your thighs and walk keeping the card in place . Now use your hips at the same time. Rumba Walks Forever.
