Training.

Does anybody have any training hints or methods. I discovered quite by accident if i do Spot Turn after Spot Turn in the Rumba i find my Turning Lock in the Waltz is so much easier. Try it. Learn to do the Spot Turns correctly, might as well, and do them solo. Then try anything in your Waltz routine that has plenty of turns in it. How this came about was a latin Class i go, to is run on the same lines as the very famous coach in Slovinia Barbara Ambrose. Everything is done solo and in a line just like Line Dancing ( thats where the similarity ended ) In this group we had 2 Quarter of a turn 4 Half Turns and 2 full Turns all withinin 12 Bars of Music which included 3 Rumba Walks and a couple of Cucarachas and 2 Spirals .After when things had quietened down and people were leaving I thought without raising to much attention, after all this is a Latin Studio, i would try part of my Waltz routine. I suprised myself with the ease that i went through these few steps. It was of course through the amount of turning i had done over the last couple of hours. I passed this on to another person with the same result. I hope this may help somebody. But as i said Learn to do the Spot Turns properly incase you do take up Latin. It wouldn't do to do a few hundred Spot Turns badly and form bad habits.
Just to make it clear the Latin excercise is done continuously with in between disks enough time to shake the legs, get a bit of advice on technique , and start again.

I have always felt there was a carry over between dances. I also agree that commiting an incorrect movement to muscle memory, through a lot of repetition creates problems. When we started, we learned certain movements with incorrect technique and did them wrong until they were committed to muscle memory. Overcoming that, has been a major challenge. Our basic chacha chasse still leaves a lot to be desired for that reason. Foretunately we did not take lessons very long before our teachers started not tolerating that and we learned most dances with correct technique for the start.

Dennis. have you noticed how the Cha Cha Chasse has gone away from the correct technique which was B flat B.flat B.flat. It is now B.flat. Ball. B.flat. If this is to the left there is a turn of the hips to the left and back again the right knee has a bend in it and is in front of the body.
feet in line heel high off the floor. See Slavik DVD. This excercise can be done continuousely either left or right at varying speed.
The same action is also being used in the Rumba but not as a Chasse.
Heres the timing for the Rumba
Side left 2 3 4 1. each beat a step. just repeat. Use the slight turn of the hips. Warning . If you have any knee problems don't over do it, or at least warm up thoroughly.
This is another which we incorpotate into a group. Starting RF two Rumba Walks. Then to the side one bar as above. LF should be free to repeat two walks and the action to the right. The different use of the timing is a good challenge and practise.
If you wished to do the two walks starting RF and Cucarachas to the left then right then walk on LF repeating but the other way around. For a timing excercise try the two groups one after the other putting two Spot Turns one after the other in between. I think that is twelve bars of music to start from the beginning again. When you get real good put the arms in. Both man and Lady do the exact same both solo .Good luck.
I had a bit of a sore knee so I sat out front watching. It was fantastic to see twenty people boys and girls all in sync. with each other dancing this routine. All are competition dancers so you can imagine how good it looked. This type of training came from Barbara Ambrose at the Orska School of Dancing in Slovenia which she introduced to Blackpool in the congress 1997.
