Practicing American Tango

After doing some private classes to learn Tango with an instructor, I come home wondering what to practice. I cannot remember the patterns that are danced with me to follow.

In starting out, should I be focusing on correct body positions. I find the lowering awkward and to stay there. Finding my center is hard in this dance.

What type of practice is there to do on Tango basics, is my question between lessons.

How does one become a good Tango dancer and comfortable with it.

Thanks for sending me your experience in learning this dance.

The obvious answer is the best one in my opinion. The best practice is to dance it.

And practice with a partner. I see many people try to get that lowered walk by themselves, but they end up doing more of a duckwalk.

Imagine yourself in a room with a ceiling that is about a half inch above your head. You would naturally lower a tad to walk in that room. But don't bend your knees and walk, flex them.

Those are the descriptions I was given and they worked for me. Mainly stick with a partner and dance it over and over.

Thanks JB_Locke,

I guess I will wait til my next lesson with my teacher. She is the one teaching and dancing with me.

Lowering only half inch doesn't seem bad when I slightly bend my knees. I guess when she keeps telling me to stay lower, I must be rising from my knees without knowing I am coming up.

I will keep dancing it.

It's very common when first learning tango to start a dance low in your knees and, without realizing it, gradually rise up as you're concentrating on remembering the steps and other techniques you're learning at the same time. But soon the low position will feel more natural and stay consistent. It might help to practice the footwork of the steps you're learning, so they can quickly become something you don't have to think a whole lot about.
