Jive Steps

Jonathan. The International Style. In an IDSF competition Karen Hardy was giving the commentary. Out of six, one couple were doing the Swing Jive which is the one we all learn with the awing of the hips and the Chasses. She said they are wrong trying to do that style of Jive. They are having difficulty keeping in time with the music. I think if we look at the recent finals with the Jive everybody is doing Flick Jive. The other one is gone and is relegated to the Social scene. The basic timing is still the same but ( for want of a better description ) the Chasses are beng done on the spot. The knees are picked up higher also. Is this worth commenting on.

If we are talking about the same IDSF competition, Karen did not say the Danish couple's Jive was wrong. She said the music played was too fast for their style Jive.

So was the music faster than regulation?

Or were they merely swinging their hips too much for the tempo? Traditional jive and "swing" both have hip swing, but jive has to be a lot more compact with more subtle and understated swing given the tempo!

Relatively inexperienced dancers don't seem to have much trouble dancing a subtle hip swing at regulation jive tempo, once they calm down and stop trying to dance overtempo swing.

Put it this way. They were the only couple on the floor dancing Swing Jive. There dance did not fit the music being played. Therefore it was wrong . They were chasing the beat. Isn't that correct.

Be careful. We are talking about Klaus and Vitoria here. How can they be "wrong"?

I'm not really convinced that they are (there is after all a difference between subtle, compact swing jive, and swing jive that's too "busy" for the music), but on one point I have to agree with quickstep:

Being wrong is about what you do, not who you are.

One is called Swing Jive and is better suited to a slower tempo that what is being played. It has a beat value of 1/2 1/2 1. played at 32-36 bars per minute. Jive is played at 42-44 and has a beat value of 40-44 (can be faster) Jive has a more pumping action. Swing more swinging from side to side. The only cominality between the two is they are based on two elements a Rock Step and a Chasse. after that the style, music, character are different. A trained competition dancer at a Social where the music might be played as low as 28 bars per minute would go to a type of Swing Jive. If the music is played at about 40 bpm. There off. Any arguments see Hazel Fletcher.
