Ballroom dress shirt

Does anyone know what those little flaps are for for a ballroom dress shirt (they're about chest height and on either side of the pique material)? I just got one (costs an arm and a leg!) and now I have to figure out the collar thingy and these mysterious flaps.

The idea is that you can thread the suspenders (braces) through them.
