She Moves through the Fair

A beautiful Waltz to dance to performed by Boyzone. It is obvious from the words that it is from a traditional Irish theme. It has been recorded many times. From the words it is obvious that the girl has passed away. She appears and says . It wont be long for our wedding day. Which must mean they will soon be united. My question is what is meant by the Fair. Is it the equivilent of a Mall or what. "She Moves through the Fair". Does anybody know.

Probably the equivalent of a Mall, nothing much more. Another poem that links fairs to death is the 23rd poem from A. E. Housman's A Shropshire Lad: "The lads in their hundreds to Ludlow come in for the fair ... The lads that will die in their glory and never be old."

Beware ... the fair!

Still, not all fair references are so gloomy. Cf. Easthope Martin's Come to the Fair: "The sun is ashining to welcome the day, Heigh-ho! Come to the fair!"

Happy dancing!
