Waltz music

Hi,

Can anyone tell me which waltz the following songs are for: the Viennese waltz or the slow waltz

1)Minute Waltz by Chopin

This sounds too fast to be a slow waltz, but the steps for the Viennese Waltz don't quite seem to fit, either.

2) Waltz from the Serenade for Strings by Tchaikovsky

I think this sounds suitable for the slow waltz, but it also seems to fit the V. waltz, which is it?

I'm new to both classical music and ballroom dancing, so am not very certain.

Thanks!

THe tchaikovsky would be a nice viennese waltz. depends on the actual tempo of course (58-60 bars per minute is what you want)
Chopin's minute waltz?? This doesn't have the right 'feeling' for dancing any sort of waltz to (i don't think so anyway)

I don't have the sheet music etc for either piece, so I don't know what the tempo is. Does anyone know?

As to the Chopin piece, well what kind of waltz then? I thought there's only the two.

I can't imagine the Chopin bening danceable to any decent performance or recording of the piece. It isn't really the tempo, but the phrasing, which is untypical of viennese waltz; and a musical interpretation cries out for a great deal of departure from strict tempo, which would be so important to dancers.

I have two recordings of first class pianists playing the piece, and it wouldn't be possible to dance any sort of waltz to either. I suppose that someone could use the thematic material in the piece and produce a version in strict tempo, specifically for dancing, but I don't think the results would be very attractive.

Don't think Chopin's music is amenable to ballroom dancing, inspite the fact he composed many waltz pieces. There is a Brahms walz piece that is often played for ballroom linedance. But I have not heard it in ballroom dances. Pity!
