Dance studios - how long have they been around?

Does anyone know...

How long has the dance studio as we know it today been around?

Did it originate in New York or L.A. and did either Fred Astaire or Arthur Murray lead the way?

According to Arthur Murray's home page they are the second oldest franchise organisation in the US. His first actual studio opened in 1938. Fred Astaire studios started in 1947, so neither originated the dance studio. I'm curious as to which franchise organisation is the oldest. Any ideas?

Fred's and Murray's both have homepages...I bet they both list when they opened up their first schools and where...

I know Murray's got started when AM himself started selling "postcards" with the little feet and pattern descriptions on them by mail!
