Place to learn ballroom dance

One of the dance studio in Oakville has a summer dance promotion for ballroom dance. It took me a long time + my birthday to convince my DH to take ballroom dance with me. Now we are at the end of the promotion period, our teacher suprised us with a $2800 bill for the next three months if we would like to continue to do private lessons for 50 minutes per session twice a week. We are not doing it for performance. It coste me no more than two hundred dollars twenty years ago for 2 years (6 semesters) group class + Friday night practice, + my second hand dance shoes. We just want to have fun and able to dance. Can someone sugguest a good place to start? Is Living Art Center a good place to go for ballroom dance class? My DH has 2 left feet so I need good teachers. Any input will be greatly appreicated.

There are a lot of women who'd be glad to put up with your husband's two left feet just based on his willingness to go dancing at all, you know. Two rights don't make another right all the time either, necessarily.

Imagine how some of these guys feel, hearing about it for years, taking that long to pluck up the courage, just to go get cornered and hissed at by their wives in a group class until the teacher comes and saves them. That's a heck of a kind of love right there...

You should be paying $60 to $120 per hour for private lessons depending on the studio and location. At $120 / hour for 3 months (24 Private lessons) you would be paying $2800 which is top $ for your lessons in my opinion.

Going twice a week has nothing to do with preforming or competing. It has everything to do with practice, learning, comprehension, improving and everything else that a sport requires. Most sports require 2 to 4 hours per day. Could you learn how to play basketball once per week? Yes. It would take forever and you would stink at it.

However, taking one private per week, which they will allow you to do, taking all the group classes and dances offered will speed up the process. Taking 10 privates per week will do that as well but not a high percentage of people can afford to do that.

$200 20 years ago? Then you didn't take from the right people or studio. Private lessons were still $60 to $120 / hour. Group classes were still $7.50 to $10 / hour per person. More like $10 to $15 today.

Here are my suggestions. If you only want to take 1 lesson per week, then state that to the studio. Try other local studios in your area and see what they have to offer. If you find a location that offers instruction with 2 people teaching, go somewhere else. A Professional Instructor learns both sexes parts and has been trained to do both sexes part. Therefore, no need for 2 instructors during class. Less than $60 / hour for a private, probably should go someplace else. Less than $10 / hour for a group, probably should go someplace else.

By the way, good instructors cost money. Bad ones are a dime a dozen.

I dont know where you are taking your lessons ( NYC ? ), but lessons from independant teachers ( of high calibre ) were $ 50 tops... even today, in one metro area they are still $ 50/60 an hr...the chain schools always have higher rates.. higher o/heads ..

Even in the UK, priv. lessons are still only £30/ 40 an hr...( $ 58/ 70 )

If I were in london, I would charge more due to floor costs, but they are the exception .
Class rates are usually $ 10 per.

My coaching rate in the states never exceeded $ 75 ( plus exp. )thru 05..

Terence is quite correct. My lessons are $50/hour (I take two hours at a time) and I get full hours.

The current rate among most pros in Atlanta (according to recent informal surveys by myself and friends) is $65/45 minute session for ballroom/Latin quality instruction with substantial variability for certain "nationally known" coaches and more popular dances.

With a little work, you can do even better. There are pretty decent pros around for $55 - $60/hour.

I recently noticed that the Atlanta Chapter of USA Dance took down its lists of studios and instructors and I'm starting to raise hell about their absence.

You mention, clearly, that you and your DH no not want to compete. Although you would like to have fun and be able to dance together. Advise from the posters is sound - you need to check other studios and independent, as well as chain or franchise studios for costs that you and DH can handle in terms of what you want from your dancing (not on the competition scale) and what you can expect from the instructor. Practice, practice and practice, in the kitchen, living room, where-ever with each other. Even if it's only 10 minutes in front of the fireplace with your favorite song. Check out your local recreation center programs, sr. citizen centers that offer dance programs, local universities. For some reason I think your located in Ontario Canada? For comparison purposes - our current instructor charges $75 per 50 minutes (independent), our last instructor was $140 per 40 minutes (chain studio). We're very happy with our current teacher. Your not obligated to stay with your instructor or studio - find what works for both of you and have fun in the process (-:
