advice sought on shoes for a beginner

Hi,
I am looking to find a suitable pair of shoes to dance in for lessons and such. I am very new to dancing, but I am developing a love for it just the same. I have looked extensively on the internet at different dance shoes and I am not sure what is appropriate for me at this time. I am taking lessons from an Arthur Murray studio, so I am learning a variety of dances. I would guess that I need something stable enough to learn in and durable enough for practice. I also thought that possibly a closed toe would be advisable since I'm probably going to be fumbling around a bit while going through the learning process. I don't know if it is even necessary that I buy a "dance" shoe rather than a similar style off the rack from a department store. Any advice would be greatly appreciated. Thanks!
Lindsey

Why don't you get some jazz shoes, they are comfortable and suitable for any type of dancing and they aren't too expensive either

Getting "real" dance shoes makes you feel like a dancer! They have the proper support, and the sueded sole aids in turning. If you can go to a store and try them on, that's best--otherwise, your studio owners most likely have an account with a shoe vendor. See what everyone else at the studio is wearing, ask what they prefer, and where they got their shoes. I'd suggest a closed toe with a t-strap, and about a 1 1/2 to 2 inch heel. Just get something you'll feel good in!

If you do decide to look for shoes on the internet, try going to this site- www.showtimedanceshoes.com I'm sure you will find something there that you like. If you prefer not dancing in heels, then get dance sneakers, they are very comfortable to practice in, a good website to get the sneakers at is www.discountdance.com.
