Doing Turns/ Spins (Rumba)

I seem to wobble off/ thrown out of balance whenever i do front/back or left/right turns. Is it due to that my weight distribution/ posture is wrong? I see dancers doing fast and sharp yet stable turns, any good advice(s)?

Big Thanks!

Without seeing what you are doing, it is very difficult to advise, but you need to aim to have your body weight right over the ball of foot when making a turn in Rumba. Try and dance through a few turning figures, and see if you can just stop moving altogether, instead of turning. Do you wobble, or are you balanced? Remember to avoid turning while stepping: in most figures, the turn is an action that occurs between steps, rather than on them. Think of a simple Rumba Spot Turn, and take the first step, across the body, gather your weight over the ball of foot, and then make a controlled half turn, using the toe of the other foot to help your balance, before the weight change, in place, and then step forward again, before turning back to your partner. In the initial forward walk, turning, and in the final one, the feel is of a forward step, followed by a swivel. It will help to develop that action (if you need help with it), to make sure that both forward steps (taken in opposite directions, of course), are both with toe turned out - that will help to stop anticipating the turn, as you step.

I may be wide of the mark, having not seen you dance, but you may get something from the above...

Disissue. An excercise that suits even the best dancers any style. Is to face the LOD . Step straight forward with the left foot and make 1/4 of a turn to the left. Finish with the feet together. Then step with the RF and make a 1/4 turn to the right to face the LOD. Just keep going. Then try starting on the other foot.

Very hard to know the problem without seeing you.

I'll tell you the things that have been pointed out to me as the years have gone by that cause spin issues.

1. You are probably taking them too seriously. Spin like you used to when you were a child. You didn't wobble than, you aren't wobbling now so let go of some of the pressure.

2. Don't hold your shoulder back. Let it lead the movement.

3. Keep your head where it belongs, if you look around you lose balance.

4. Until you get the movement do it on bent knees.

5. Just repeat the movement over and over again until you get it right. When you do get it right, do it 100 more times so your body creates a kinesthetic memory trace.

Just advice based on what I was doing wrong...maybe helpful. Might not be.

Good luck!!

Belle

i used to that alot!!! Try practiceing more and try to keep a positve attitude. its going to take some time to get used to doing those type of turns. Remember to turn without stopping if you stop its going to throw you off balance a little bit. through it all just remember to have FUN
danceing is all about the fun not the pain from practice

My personal view is that if you CAN'T stop, then you were not balanced in the first place.

This is how in Latin i was taught to Spin. Face wall. Step to the side LF
( small step ).
Do this slow. Turn 1/2 a turn to back wall by bringing the RF to the LF.
Turn half a turn to face wall and at the same time step to the left with the LF. Do not try to face the direction you are travelling Then repeat.
Even though we call this a Spin it is actally a Three Step Turn.
If this is used in the Cha after a New York. Finish facing partner before stepping into the next New York or Spot Turn.
In our practice sesions in the Studio we Spin the whole width of the hall and back again starting on the other foot
This is not a favourite practice of mine but must be done with Spotting which is fully covered on this site if you know how to find it.The video clip is of a person moving and Spotting. I suggest a look will be of great benifit to anyone including Salsa Dancers.
