I am looking for a recent song that will work well for an American Style Rumba routine. Thanks for any suggestions.

Me too! I also want to know if the song styles that say International Rumba on the Ballroomdancers Mall Music store will work for american style also? I remember Falling into you by Celine Dion is possibly a Rumba, and a Bolero by George Michael is Jesus to a Child... I'm a teacher, but I always have to ask for confirmation what style is a song for pop music that my wedding couples bring in. Maybe there is a change in the tempo from Int. to Amer.?

It is so good to hear someone who is trying to match their timing to the music.

All of us tend to want to do what we have been taught, and what we are comfortable with.

You can make most music feel ok while doing what you are comfortable with.

However, the music does have some part in what you should dance.

Rumba has many timings. Including, Slow, Quick, Quick,---Quick, Quick, Slow,---- 2,3,4,---1,2,3,-- (And yes, you can make up your own. Many of us have tried things like, 4,1,2 just for kicks.

If you find the sheet music, you can read it for yourself.

Many songs are played differently by different bands so you can never tell unless you buy the music that exactly matches the record in your case.

Interestingly enough, a man can change from one timing to another if he has a good follower. A good follower, can make all the difference.

What you have omitted in post is the most important word.. " Rhythm "..

ALL latin dances are built around the Clave, and one should understand the poly rhythms of latin music BEFORE experimenting.

"Pop" songs, have NO relationship, to the story that is being " told ", in all latin music..

My wife and I love Rumba. Try Anita Baker (Just Because)..try Boyz 2 Men (Water Runs Dry)...Baby face (When can I see you again). If you are looking for more, ask. I have a small library of about 46,000 songs.
