When you made the decision to take up dancing did you do so on your own or were you encouraged/persuaded by a significant other, friend or family member?

I persuaded myself to do so.

Dancing was something I was always interested in, but then two events coincided--a new studio opened in my town, and my cousin was planning for her wedding. We were going to go to lessons together (forget her betrothed!), but she never did take a lesson. Now she's happily married with a two year old.
I have 3 years plus dancing under my belt--and will never stop!

Well, i won't say i made the decision to dance.... it just happened. I saw an ad in the local paper advertising the friday evening dance and the next time i passed the studio i stopped by to check it out. At that stage i had never been on a dance floor...and i am sure that instructor hoped that i would not return after my first dance lesson but i DID. And today i am glad i did.......as far as i know he is not teaching any more, not sure if it had anything to do with me..... LOL

For me it was seeing the movie "Strictly Ballroom." I had been aware of ballroom dancing before, but it never clicked before. Suddenly I thought, "that looks like so much fun. I'll bet I can do that." I was afraid I would need a partner for lessons, but soon found out I could learn by myself--well, I mean with a dance instructor. I've only had a few lessons so far, but I really like this.

This is my very first msssage in this forum =) Hello everyone

I'll start with a brief intro... from an island called Singapore... and on this island there are Community Centres (CCs) (sort of like clubs) whereby anyone can just go in and take up any course or could just book a court and play badminton.

It was this Dance Bonanza Nite in the CC that spur me into dancing =) That very night i was helping out as a volunteer in the registration counter. Then, I saw many couples dancing (mostly midde-aged) throughout the night. Somehow or another a question just popped out: "If they could dance so beautifully, why can't I?" And that's the start of a new passion which had now lasted four years and a new aspiration too: to be a dance instructor! hee... =p

I met a dancer, next week met another dancer, next week met another dancer. It was kinda surreal. They all worked together and pulled me into the studio one aftenoon and I loved it.

I decided completely on my own to take lessons. After watching the original Dance Fever and seeing people dance and look like they wer having such a great time, the allure was too powerful to resist.

I remeber the day I walked into the studio.. wow it was great! The reason I started was that my friend had just had a lesson and said it was fun. As a former sports girl I needed a new hobby/sport and danceing was just great. I have never been given so much atention from men and I just felt great. The social was fantastic and I met so many nice people. Having my own personal dance teacher that would give me compliments and move with me around the flor, instead of competing with me, was just a new world. The guys welcomed me and danced with me, I never sat still. The ladies was warm and welcomming. I got myself new friends for life and even a boyfriend -what more can a girl wish for?
