The studio where I take lessons has just changed owners. The new owners (one of them being my instructor) are asking for suggestions for "new things to do" for the socials (3 x per week). I'm sure there are tons of suggestions, and I'd like to hear from everyone.

Thanks,
Hoofer

Something like that is done at our studio for the month of May with a weekly theme. This years it's Alice in Wonderland, Arabian nights, Beauty and the Beast and will conclude with Hawaiian Luau - this to coincide with the wedding anniversary of the couple who owns the studio. They spent their honeymoon in Hawaii.

I assume that every studio does "mixers", if not it is a great idea for the beginners and those new to the studio. The mixers tend to consist of foxtrot and waltz music.

A big variety of music and dances will always
attract more dancers.

A performance by local professionals or serious competators are great ideas for inspiration.

Happy dancing.

Thank you, thank you everyone. I'll relate these suggestions to my instructor - I promise I won't take any of the credit.

I hope that everyone had a nice, safe Memorial Day weekend (inspite of the rain in NJ for the past 6 days).

Again, thank you all.

Regards,
Hoofer

my studio does stuff like newcomer dances (people can bring friends who have always wondered about ballroom, but were afraid to ask ). We also have theme dances -- upcoming is the "red, white, and blue" dance for Memorial Day. Pajama dances are always a blast, too!

The studio i attend has spring and fall festivals where each friday night dance has a theme. We are currently in the Spring one and we have had the following for theme dances:
Hat day, everything from regualar to funky ones.
disco day, lots of hustles played that night
Latin party, missed that one but heard it was great
Jack and Jill competition night
tonight is karaoke night
pot luck night.
masqurade night.
for the other party on wednesday, we had to wear our teachers color, (each teacher had a diffrent color assigned to them at the begining of the festival) you then get to see how many students belong to what teacher.
If you need other ideas, e-mail me, i have a ton of them as i help plan these myself with my current studio.

Potluck Dinner Dance

It's been awhile, but the studio I attend has held potluck dinner dances. These have been great; good food and good dancing - yeah, even if people tend to feel a little sluggish on the dance floor after a big meal.
