Volta. Cross one foot over the other like you have to pee. Now move the other foot out to the side so you are standing normal again.

Latin is all on the toes. Samba is on the 3/4 note beat. The cross over step is on that beat. I like to build up to that motion slowly and then explode into the downward forceful step as it crosses letting the body sink into the step. The foot on the side step back to a normal position typically stays a little behind rather than completely aliging in a normla stance.

Whisk. Same motion on 3/4 beat. Style now is to keep the upper body level (shoulders). First beat: Standing normal. Push off to right off of your left foot. Leave the left there but all your body goes over to the right and lands on the right foot. Bent right knee. Left foot still pointed out to left and making a nice line. Now on the 3/4 beat: Move left foot locked behind right (left knee near back of right knee). Roll hips so your body weight goes onto the left foot for an instant. Then drop weight onto your right foot. Just like the weight drop in Volta. Finishing the second beat. Repeat to other side or do another move.

Enjoy!
Tim
BTW: I find samba at most clubs is too fast for whisk but you can use moves like this in the endless-mono-rythm songs that they play sometimes. You can use Voltas in anything.

Wig17-

Consider purchasing a latin syllabus book from the USISTD. It will give you all the correct footwork, foot positions, body position etc. etc. for each step.

An excellent, and probably necessary, companion for that book are syllabus tapes. Corky and Shirley do good syllabus and their tapes are readily available.

Finally, this way you know that you are getting proper instruction. It's rather difficult to outline full patterns properly in a message board

Best wishes, M

Some excellent advice below. Just to add some small point. In the Voltas the height of the heel from the floor must remain constant. Don't let it pop up and down.
Also the Samba is not a race, travelling too far can lose sharpness. Any professional will tell you that the Samba is the hardest of all the Latin Dances to become proficient in. Good luck.
