Trying to Learn

Hi All,

My wife and I really want to get started in the learning process of dancing. We don't have a location where we can take classes near us so we are looking for a dvd that might get us started. We are complete beginners and at first just want to learn how to "slow dance". We would also like, however, to learn more advanced and faster dance steps as well. Does anyone know of a DVD that we could buy (and where it might be sold) that would be useful to a couple of 2-left feet beginners! Thanks for any advice you might could provide.

Justin

Hi justin
There is nothing as good as a class, since the teacher can deal with your individual problems. There is good learning material at this site http://www.dancesport.uk.com/software/index
I'm sure there is similar material available in the US.
You should go social dancing as soon as possible as there is nothing like practical experience to improve practical skills.

A DVD? No, but you might try DanceVison's section for beginners:

Note you'll need a current version of your browser, or the site might not work correctly. Good Luck!

Justin,

I agree with Phil... live classes and/or lessons is definitely the way to go. Video or DVD instruction is a great supplement to lessons, but rarely useful as a lone source of instruction for someone just starting out.

Unless you're in a remote area of the Gobi desert, there is probably a studio somewhere in your area offering some group classes. If not, there may be a college or community center, or at the very least, an individual teacher. Let us know where you live, and we can try to help you find something.

The Ballroomdancers.com directory is a good place to start looking: https://www.ballroomdancers.com/Directory/. You can also try dancescape.com, dancevision.com, and dancedirectory.com. Or even look in your local telephone directory!

As for DVD's: They haven't quite caught on in the ballroom dance world yet. If you still have one of those things we used to call a VCR, there are plenty of options. The best selection, as Ralph mentioned, is at dancevision.com. They're a bit pricey, but the quality is good.

Good luck with your search!

Regards,
Jonathan Atkinson
