I am a Latino and former adjudicator for the Fred Astaire organization. Cumbia, aka the Circle dance can be dance different ways depending on the music. It originated in Columbia, and traditionally is danced side by side but also in partnership and traveling around the L.O.D. (Line of Dance). At Latin clubs where Salsa is danced, the cumbia has been modernized being a spot dance due to the small dance floor, but with the same timing eg. 1-2-&-3-4-& or slow-quick-quick, slow-quick-quick.
