Shoes in NYC

Hi, I just had my first comp this past weekend and placed top six in all newcomer events. Our team coach suggested now may be a good time to purchase ballroom dance shoes. Could anyone recommend stores in New York City? I've been to Capezio's on Broadway and 57th, but they had limited variety and most were special order. Anywhere in the five boroughs would work. Thanks so much!

When I lived in NYC 10 years ago there was a Freed store somewhere. I have no idea if it's still there, but you could look for them in the yellow pages. Also, ask your coach where he/she buys his/her shoes.

Laura and Jerry,

Thanks so much for your advice! I will definitely go check out Worldtone. Their focus on ballroom dancing is especially encouraging!

Freed used to be on sixth avenue but they moved to Long Island City somewhere.

The best place I know of is WORLDTONE whcih is on Seventh Avenue, just North of 23rd street. Very large selection and friendly people. And they are ballroom rather than ballet oriented.

I've shopped there. Nice folks, good selection, what more do you want to know?

I agree. In addition to a good selection and helpful staff, they are really, really nice.

Once I left a scarf (made by a friend of mine) there. Not only did they call me to ask if it was mine, they stayed late so I could pick it up.

I was shocked! And they say New York is not a friendly place...
