American Style Waltz
Backward Changes O.P.
9b. Backward Changes O.P.
Fact Sheet
Official Name:Backward Changes O.P.
Dance / Level:Intermediate Bronze American Style Waltz
Aliases:Backward Outside Partner Change Steps, Progressive Twinkles Backward, Backward Twinkles
Suggested
Prerequisites:
Left Box (Reverse) Turn, Closed Backward Changes, Forward Changes O.P.

Backward Changes O.P., or outside partner, are similar to basic Backward Changes, with a few exceptions:

  • The first step of each Change (i.e. the man's back step) is taken with lady in outside partner position.
  • Each Backward Change O.P. will turn 1/4 to the right or left to shift the lady from left to right side position or vice-versa.
  • The resulting line of movement is a zig-zag down line of dance, shifting back and forth from backing diagonal wall to backing diagonal center.

This figure is written as a 4-measure sequence, beginning with steps 1-3 of a Left Box Turn to properly align the dancers for the Backward Changes. Measure 2 is a Closed Backward Change, beginning in-line and ending set up for outside partner position. Measure 3 is the only true Backward Change O.P. (although measures 2 and 3 can be repeated as desired, with measure 2 beginning O.P.). The final measure is steps 4-6 of a Left Box Turn, beginning with lady in O.P. position, and ending with man facing wall.

The entry and exit used in measures 1, 2 and 4 represent the most basic method for achieving and then resolving the outside partner position. However other possibilities exist. For a complete list of preceding and following figures, click on the appropriate tab above.

In addition to the sequence outlined in the man's and lady's parts, an alternate version can be used, which represents a sort of "mirror image" of the original. In this variation, the man would begin with steps 1-3 of a Natural Turn to end backing line of dance. The first Backward Change begins with the man's left foot, to transition from in-line to outside partner position. He can then dance a sequence of RF and LF Backward Changes O.P., to finish with 4-6 Right Box Turn (first step taken with lady O.P.) and ending with man facing center.
